Defensible Space Chipping Program

SCFSC will chip brush that has been cleared 100’ from permanent structures and/or 30’ from any roadside or driveway used for evacuation purposes.

Piles to be chipped must be hand stacked.  We cannot chip tractor or front loader stacked piles.  Chipping can only be done along a road or driveway with sufficient access and space for a truck and chipper to turn around.  Questions? Chipping Pile

Chipping Program Brush Pile Requirements:

  • Property must be located in Wildland-Urban Interface areas (foothills and mountains). We do not provide chipping in urban areas.
  • Chipping can only be done along a road or driveway with sufficient access and space for a truck and chipper to safely turn around. Properties with extremely steep or narrow or dirt driveways may not be eligible. Contact us if you have questions.
  • Piles must be within 5 feet of a road or driveway, and on the uphill side.
  • Piles must be free of roots, stumps, rocks, mud, poison oak, blackberry vines, palm fronds, cactus, and bamboo.
  • If you need to remove Scotch or French broom, material should be cut or pulled prior to the flowers setting seed. Broom with intact seed heads will not be chipped.
  • Piles must be stacked by hand with all cut ends facing the same direction toward the access route. Tractor or front loader stacked piles can’t be chipped.
  • All material chipped will be blown back onto the property.* The chips can be used for mulch.
  • SCFSC cannot clean up timber harvest debris, orchards or vacant lots. The parcel must have a structure on it.
  • Leaves, pine needles, thistles, and yard clippings can't be chipped. Your green waste program may be able to take these materials.
