Defensible Space Chipping Program

NOTICE: Chipping services have ended for Lexington Hills, Los Gatos, Saratoga,  south San Jose, Morgan Hil, Gilroy, and all other areas of Santa Clara County for 2016.  Thank you for preparing your defensible space before the start of fire season! -  Please check back in January for our 2017 chipping schedule.

SCFSC will chip brush that has been cleared 100’ from permanent structures and/or 30’ from any roadside or driveway used for evacuation purposes.

Piles to be chipped must be hand stacked.  We cannot chip tractor or front loader stacked piles.  Chipping can only be done along a road or driveway with sufficient access and space for a truck and chipper to turn around.  Questions? Chipping Program Brush Pile Requirements:Chipping Pile

  • Chipping can only be done along a road or driveway with sufficient access and space for a truck and chipper to turn around.  Contact us if questions.
  • Piles must be within 5 feet of a road or driveway.
  • Piles must be on the uphill side of road or driveway.
  • Piles must be free of roots, stumps, rocks, mud, poison oak, blackberry and vines.
  • Piles must be stacked by hand with all cut ends facing the same direction toward the access route. Tractor or front loader stacked piles can’t be chipped.
  • All material chipped will be blown back onto the property.* The chips can be used for mulch.
  • SCFSC cannot clean up timber harvest debris, orchards or vacant lots.
  • Scotch broom (Scotch broom is OK until it seeds in late spring), leaves, pine needles, yard clippings or decaying wood can't be chipped. Your green waste program may be able to take these materials.
