Mora Drive and Ravensbury Avenue in Los Altos Hills, California, provide two significant routes of thoroughfare/ingress for the Los Altos Hills Community. These roads exist as an egress and ingress in the event of a fire. To secure the integrity of these egress/ingress routes’ integrity, Los Altos Hills County Fire District and Santa Clara County FireSafe Council propose a roadside treatment of fuels.

Project Dates:

  • Start Date: August 9, 2023
  • Project Completed: August 11, 2023

Project site:

This evacuation route project proposes to treat two roads:

The Ravensbury Ave portion of this evacuation project will begin at the intersection of Magdalena Rd (37.349496, -122.111213) and end at the upper section of Ravensbury Ave (37.338808, -122.105459), at the District’s jurisdiction line.

The Mora Dr evacuation route will begin at the Eastbrook Ave intersection (37.342471, -122.095435) and end at the top of Mora Dr (37.337841, -122.100975) where the road intersects with Rancho San Antonio County Park & Open Space Preserve.

Right of Entry Permit (ROE) due back date: July 10, 2023

Goals for this project:

The immediate goal is to remove the roadside hazardous vegetation that could fall and block the roadway in the event of a wildfire or would make the roadway extremely hot and unsafe to travel. The broader goal is to enhance fire resiliency by reducing ladder fuels, creating shaded fuel breaks, reducing invasive plant species, and to improve evacuation routes, all of which makes Los Altos Hills residents safer. This project will also increase Santa Clara County’s developing shaded fuel break system and provide opportunities to protect or manage watersheds from future wildfires. Additionally, reducing competition for light and water in the understory plants, shrubs and young trees and treating hazardous trees where feasible will create a healthier and more vigorous forest and woodland.
